ALMADRABA by Óscar Peñas

BAM Next Wave Festival 2018

LIGHTING DESIGNER APPRENTICE

Spanish-born guitarist, Oscar Peñas, performs his latest album Almadraba (2019), as part of the 2018 Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It is a classical jazz suite that interacts with Iberian traditions inspired by the traditional almadraba* fishing in Andalusia.

*Almadraba, a Spanish word with an Arabic origin, indicates a place where striking occurs. It is also a 3,000-year old Andalusian fishing tradition (brought by the seafaring Phoenicians) of trapping and catching Atlantic bluefin tuna - shown in some of the pictures to the right, displayed as a projection during the performance.

I acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land where I work and live. I pay my respects to Elders past and present. I celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land.
